Transforming Railway Surveillance Infrastructure



Strategic Surveillance for Passenger Safety

Rail transportation serves as a convenient means of reaching destinations. However, ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority for railway management, making security monitoring an indispensable responsibility. By strategically deploying cameras, administrators can enhance passenger safety, prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas, and identify unattended belongings.

Despite using CCTV systems in train stations for monitoring activities, there have been over 20 documented accidents between 2018 and June 2020. Each accident necessitates meticulous investigation, prompting aggressive measures to prevent future incidents.

For a new underground railway station construction in South Taiwan, EtherWAN was selected to provide Power over Ethernet (PoE) systems. These systems collect data from security cameras and transmit it to a control center for more effective surveillance management. With these monitoring systems, allow administrators to track captured events and ensure a secure environment for all passengers.


Conquering PoE Challenges

  • Installation: The system should fit into a 19-inch 12U rackmount cabinet and must operate at -20 to 70°C without a fan under extreme temperatures.
  • PoE standard: The standard should be higher than IEEE 802.3at, and the total power budget must be more than 480 watts.
  • Bandwidth: Network devices demand higher bandwidth requirements and non-blocking to deliver video data and support 10G uplink.
  • Management: The system must support, at least, Lite Layer 3 functions and EN 50121-4 certified.

Reliable Networking Made Easy

EtherWAN's EX75900 PoE Lite Layer 3 managed switch was a perfect choice for the project. This rugged switch model is a full gigabit managed Ethernet switch that comes in a convenient rack-mount form factor with 24 ports of 10/100/1000BASE-T(X) and IEEE 802.3bt compliant, it also has 4 ports of 1G/10G SFP+ for core network connections. Its high port density reduces the need for multiple switches, enabling efficient camera connections.

The EX75900 boasts a substantial total power budget of up to 720 watts, accommodating various powered devices such as pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, speed domes, and surveillance and laser cameras. Intelligent PoE scheduling, watchdog, and force mode functions offer comprehensive and smart management of these powered devices.


Creating a Safe Space

Using EX75900 switches for the monitoring system, the administrators can monitor and manage unexpected events, including platform status, left items, railway intrusion, restricted areas, and emergencies. The system not only monitors but also completely records all captured events.
