Igniting Breakthroughs in California’s Intelligent Transportation System

The Future of Urban Mobility

In bustling California, a metropolis thrives as a home to professional sports teams and major sporting events. To enhance traffic flow and road safety across the city's main arteries, a decision was made to expand the existing central traffic control system.

A primary objective was to establish the city as a pioneer in the region by implementing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) supported by a robust 10G network backbone. The upgraded network infrastructure was purposefully engineered to not only accommodate 10G speeds but also to provide multiple layers of redundancy.

The city's network utilizes the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF v2) protocol, ensuring efficient data routing across diverse fiber pathways to the traffic management center (TMC) without compromising bandwidth. Furthermore, the city's interconnected intersections have failover paths in case of issues with fiber conduits, aggregation points, and TMC disruptions.

Security and Network Demands

Security for this project was the priority. A secure RADIUS authentication protocol was required on all deployed switches to verify the access to pre-approve network devices. Additionally, multiple layers of network redundancy were required to ensure an uninterrupted network in case of a device or path failure.

Strategic ITS Network Solutions

EtherWAN played a pivotal role in crafting the master plan for the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and executed the technical implementation of VLANs, multicast routing, OSPF, and redundancy within the city's expansive ITS network, encompassing nearly 200 signalized intersections.

This network was meticulously designed to be divided into five distinct zones. This segmentation strategy was employed to minimize the occurrence and impact of broadcast storms and flooding, safeguarding network performance while enhancing security. An intuitive and streamlined IP addressing scheme was seamlessly integrated to align with this zoning structure.

In this comprehensive solution, every traffic intersection boasts its dedicated network switch, and each zone boasts four hubs. Ensuring redundancy, each intersection establishes connections with two hubs. To manage the substantial data flow from video surveillance cameras, 10-gigabit switches are strategically positioned between every hub. Additionally, the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is effectively employed to bolster redundancy on the Layer 3 switches throughout the network.

To construct this network, the subsequent EtherWAN products were utilized:
EG97000 28-Port Hardened Managed Layer 3 Switch for connecting hubs and routing between zones and the TMCs
EX77964 Lite Layer 3 Hardened Managed 24-port Gigabit and 4-port 1G/10G SFP+ switch for the intersections to the hubs

Future-Ready Transportation Systems

Modern ITS systems offer new services and enhanced management capabilities for urban transportation networks. EtherWAN has proven its ability to deliver comprehensive solutions that not only meet the present-day demands of extensive networks but also seamlessly adapt to future upgrade requirements, all while meeting the stringent security and redundancy prerequisites of essential traffic infrastructure.
